Back in the 1980s, the so-called “serotonin hypothesis” became part of pop science. The theory was simple: low serotonin, bad; high serotonin, good. Then, with the advent of the internet, serotonin discourse spiked. Memes gave us serotonin, apparently. Sunshine? That gave us it, too.
